From The Editor December 2017

Dear readers,

Winter is coming, and so is 4G. People yearning for a little bit more of the soothing weather will watch out how high the temperature rises, and people keeping up with the news of 4G will be watching how high the bids rise. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission is expected to open an auction in December for selling spectrum in three bands, which are meant for using for offering 4G services. Hence, our cover story is on 4G and what that means for data usage. Read all about the background to this in our cover story and learn what stakeholders, experts and policymakers are saying.

4G service is part of the Digital Bangladesh promise that Sheikh Hasina’s government made. In a very special interview, we talk to one of the main proponents of this vision, the State Minister for the ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak. The State Minister’s interview with us is accompanied by a host of other exciting interviews. In the wake of Robi’s merger with Airtel, we talk to Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, the CEO and managing director of Robi Axiata Limited. We caught up with Chue Chee Wei, the vice president of Dell EMC for Asia Emerging Market during his visit to Dhaka last month. We also had an intriguing conversation with the resplendent Sonia Bashir Kabir, the managing director for Microsoft Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Laos.

As you read this month’s issue, Digital World 2017 will have been going on, which will be among a number of notable ICT events that took place this year. And like the previous events, we will be covering Digital World and bringing you vivid and in-depth coverage in the following month. With a wide range of subjects covered, this is certainly one of the most bold and dynamic issues of the magazine that we ever put out in the market. In addition to covering the IT and finance sectors, we have a piece on women in the hospitality industry, a piece on commute solution and automotive industry, a report on green bricks and an interesting interview that reveals how many hundred crore taka’s worth of biscuit Bangladeshis consume in a month. Our colourful infographs are there for those who love to get a quick visual tour through facts and numbers. A host of other articles will provide news of local events, industry updates and an unlimited pass to ultimate geekdom.

Wishing you a cozy reader’s winter.
