From The Editor August 2018

Dear readers,

‘Startup’ has been a buzzword since little tech companies started to rise like a non-toxic mushroom cloud and completely change the landscape of entrepreneurship. Technology is the great enabler and tech-based companies are now part and parcel of people’s lives. Bangladesh has jumped on the bandwagon and the high aspiration of making a digital Bangladesh propelling small companies take big initiatives.

Buzzwords tend to die out, but startup continues to be a hot topic – and rightly so. That is why our cover story this month focuses on the issue. We look at the funding situation in Bangladesh, an ongoing struggle for the startups anywhere, but more so in a country like this one where a VC ecosystem is absent. We talk to some of the successful startups that have scaled up in the past few years. We also talk to experts to shed light on what is possible and what can be done.

Our regular feature is in-depth interviews that allow readers the unique insight of learning what people and companies across the industries are doing and thinking. We catch up with the incumbent President of BASIS Syed Almas Kabir for a very timely and interesting interview. We also sat down with a few other people for interviews that help understand their fields and the business landscape better.

As always, Fintech can be an excellent resource to get all important IT and finance news of the past month in one single place. Read about what’s been going on in different sectors that make up the growing fintech industry. Read also reports on important events throughout the past month, conveniently put together for you in one magazine.

Here’s wishing you happy reading and Eid Mubarak.
