DISCUSSION HELD ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP IN IT SECURITY

In a bid to discuss and transfer knowledge on the latest trend of IT security to the C-suits, a cyber-talk titled “Cyber Security Shifting the Business Paradigm”, organized by the One World Info Tech was held on August 3 at the Gulshan Club in the capital.

One of the main purposes of the discussion was to create an‘Executive Leadership of Cyber Security’ who would take responsibility of persuading the board of directors of banks to adopt the latest trends in IT solution.

The panelists who were there on that day included Taher Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Managing Director and Head of IT, Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd, Abul Kashem Md. Shirin, Managing Director & CEO,Dutch Bangla Bank Ltd., Mr. S. M. Mainuddin Chowdhury, Additional Managing Director, Southeast bank and Professor Dr. M. Khairul Hossain, Chairman, Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.

The session started with a briefing on what exactly cyber security is and how it is a ‘shared responsibility’ of people, process, tools and technology working together to protect the ICT assets and services of banking industries.

The issues of crown jewels (key business components), how the-services are managed and by whom, where the services are stored and how they can be accessed were discussed on that day.

Besides elaborated discussion on the types of connectivity (like BPL , LAN, WAN, wireless network) and how the organizations of the banking industry or data center are defenders of the third parties (like communications, applications, etc.)were enlightened by the panelists.

The second part of the session focused mainly on the education and proper training of the IT staffs for maintaining the costly security appliances of the IT sectors. For example, it is still not popular for the management units of the banks to train up their IT staffs to configure the IT assets.

But in the coming days, the IT staffs should go under effective training programs for attaining sufficient guidelines and knowledge about the artificial intelligence of the sophisticated devices to detect and protect an unknown application, as stated by the speakers.

Moreover, the importance of IT training for proper and maximum utilization of the IT assets was explained for accelerating seamless operations in the coming future. The speakers also emphasized on the issues of internal and external threats which cannot be solved without the adequate knowledge of the staffs and without the further support and assistances by the CEOs.

The fact that the continuous IT training is a part and parcel of maintaining cyber security has been emphasized over and over again in this event.■
